I messed up and left a damp paper towel on the grill to kind of let it soak before washing the plates. Then I forgot about it. OH yeah, I turned it on a few days later – letting it warm up to grill my burger patties – and burned the paper towel to the plates. Totally ruined the plates. The coating came off along with the paper towel. I tried to get new plates and they cost more than a new unit. The coating on these new Foremans is not as strong as the old teflon coating on the older models (I got rid of my old ones because of Teflon warnings – wish I’d kept them.) On the one I recently ruined – I damaged it prior to the paper towel incident – by cooking a t-bone steak. The bone scratched through the coating!!!! I wasn’t rough with it – just normal setting the lid down. Now I just use it for hamburgers, or steaks with no bone. I don’t trust it to reach proper temp. on pork or chicken. (I don’t have a thermometer to check it.) Sure does get a lot of grease drained off a hamburger patty Steaks don’t seem to come out as tender as I remember them being with the old model, but good enough. They come out well done, cooked all the way through. Only enough room on the grill for two (bread slice sized) patties. I fix two patties – put them on the grill. Prepare two more patties and the first ones are done. Cooks Fast. Not a lot of smoke. Saves me time and no grease splatters on my stove or a greasy pan to clean. The grill plates clean up easy with a damp paper towel, while it’s still hot. Just don’t leave it on there LOL. I wait until the next day to clean the drip tray. The grease will harden. I pour off the juice then use a paper towel to wipe out the grease. Don’t pour the hot grease drippings down/into your sink unless you want a clogged drain later. It will build up. (You old fogies already know better – that’s a tip for the youngsters
